The conversation progressed, bumper-car style, to a very heated discussion about death and the survival of the soul. It amazes me that we, as a species, can argue so fervently over something that is, when all is said and done, unknowable and unprovable. Nonetheless, we all arrive at conclusions and cleave to our certainties: that there is nothing but the Void; or that we will find ourselves writing an admissions exam at the Pearly Gates. About This Quote

The idea of the soul is something that is completely unknown. For hundreds of years, religions have taught people that they are living this life because they have an immortal soul. They believe that after they die, there is something called heaven or hell. The problem with this belief is that no one knows if there are actually souls, meaning no one can prove it exists.

This idea has made people very superstitious. It has also given people the fear of death because they believe that they will suffer if their soul leaves them here on Earth. Even though our souls are not proven to exist, we still feel the need to live up to some sort of moral code in order to avoid punishment when we die.
